Gulliver was born in a village in England. His family was neither rich nor poor. When Gulliver was fourteen years old, he went to Oxford to study. After three years, Gulliver became an apprentice to Dr. James Bates, a famous doctor in London. Four years later, he went to the Netherlands to study medicine. When he finished his studies, he became a ship's doctor and traveled for three and a half years. Then he returned to England and married Mary Burton. Gulliver and his wife lived in London. Dr. Bates helped him find patients.

For some years Gulliver earned a lot of money. But then Dr. Bates died. There was nobody to help Gulliver find patients, so he earned less money. Gulliver decided to become a ship's doctor again. He went to the London docks and met Captain William Pritchard.
Captain Pritchard: I am looking for a doctor to work on my ship. We are going to travel to the East Indies.
Gulliver: I will be happy to work for you.
Captain Pritchard: Ok, then. We are going to leave from Bristol on May 4.

It was a long journey. The ship arrived in the East Indies in November. It was the beginning of the wet season in the southern hemisphere. One day the ship ran into a terrible storm.
Sailor: Look out! There's a big rock ahead of us! The sea was very rough and the ship sank. Everybody drowned, except for Gulliver. When the storm passed, Gulliver saw that the sea wasn't very deep and that he could touch the bottom. He walked a long way until he got to the shore. When he came out of the water, he lay down and fell asleep immediately.

Gulliver slept for a long time. When he woke up, he was lying on his back and couldn't move. He was tied to the ground. Even his hair was tied down! Then, he felt something moving on his body. He looked down and saw some very small men, about 5 inches tall. Gulliver was surprised and shouted.
Gulliver: Oh my goodness, what are these strange little creatures? The little men got a terrible shock. Some fell off Gulliver's body and hurt themselves.

Gulliver: I must get free.
Gulliver pulled his left hand free.
Gulliver: Ouch!
Hundreds of little arrows hit his hands and face. Gulliver stopped moving and no more arrows hit him. He watched the little people build a platform next to his head. Then one of them went on the platform and spoke to him. Gulliver couldn't understand their language, but he understood that they were friendly. He decided to lie still and not hurt them.

Gulliver was very hungry and very thirsty, so he used gestures to ask for food and drink. The little people immediately placed ladders against his sides. They climbed up with baskets of food and barrels of water. Gulliver ate and thanked them.
Gulliver: Thank you very much. This food is delicious.
However, there was sleeping powder in the water because the little people wanted to move Gulliver to the capital city. Soon, Gulliver fell asleep again.

The little people built a very big platform and placed Gulliver on it to move him. When Gulliver woke up, he was outside the city gates, near a big, old temple. The door to the temple was 5 feet high, so Gulliver could crawl inside. The leader of the little people spoke to Gulliver again.
Leader: You will sleep in that temple.
Then the little people untied Gulliver and put a big chain round his leg, so he could stand up. When he stood up, everybody was amazed at how tall he was. He asked them to take the chain off, but they didn't.
Gulliver: Please take this chain off. I won't hurt you.

When Gulliver stood up, he could see the strange country, which was called Lilliput. There were lots of small fields and forests around the capital city. Suddenly, Gulliver saw a lot of people outside the city gates. The King and the great lords and ladies of Lilliput were coming to see Gulliver. Gulliver lay down and put his head on the ground. Then the King went near him. He was taller than the rest of the people and very handsome. The King spoke to Gulliver and Gulliver answered, but neither of them could understand the other.

Gulliver lived in the old temple. For the first two weeks he slept on the ground. Then the little people put six hundred beds together and made a big bed for him. The King ordered six teachers to teach Gulliver the language of Lilliput. Gulliver was very good at languages and could already speak five. Very soon, he could understand a lot of Lilliputian, too. The people of Lilliput called Gulliver ‘Quinbus Flestrin’, which meant 'Man-Mountain'.
Teacher: You are a very good student.
Gulliver: Thank you. I like languages.

One day two guards visited Gulliver.
Guard: We must search your pockets.
Gulliver: I'll help you.
Gulliver picked up the guards and put them inside each of his pockets. The guards wrote descriptions of everything they saw. Some of their descriptions were very funny because they didn't know what the things were. This is what they wrote about Gulliver's handkerchief and watch:
'We found a big piece of cloth which looks like a carpet.' 'It's an engine at the end of a chain. It makes a noise like a watermill.'

Some days later the King invited Gulliver to watch a spectacle. Some people stretched a rope between two points 12 inches above the ground. Then one by one, the lords got on the rope and danced. It was very dangerous, and sometimes they fell off the rope and hurt themselves. Gulliver thought this was very strange, but then, a lot of things were strange in Lilliput...
King of Lilliput: Lord Flimnap is very good. Look how well he dances on the rope!
Gulliver: He does, your Majesty, but it is very dangerous.

Every time he saw the King, Gulliver asked him to set him free. One day the King spoke to his lords about this.
King of Lilliput: The Man-Mountain wants to be free. Should we take the chain off his leg?
Most of the lords trusted Gulliver and agreed to take the chain off. But some didn't agree because they didn't like Gulliver. Skyresh Bolgolam was one of them.
Skyresh Bolgolam: You mustn't set him free, your Majesty. He is very dangerous. He can step on us and kill us.

Finally, the King decided to set Gulliver free.
King of Lilliput: We are going to take the chain off your leg, but you must promise to behave well. You must warn us before you visit the city. You mustn't step on anybody and you mustn't damage our fields while you are walking …
Gulliver promised to be very careful. Skyresh Bolgolam: Now you must make your promise according to the laws of Lilliput: Hold your right foot with your left hand. Now put the middle finger of your right hand on top of your head and your thumb on top of your right ear…

When they took the chain off, Gulliver went to see the King's palace. The palace was in the middle of a park in the center of the city. While Gulliver was walking in the city, all the people stayed in their houses. When Gulliver arrived at the palace, he lay down and looked inside through the open windows. He saw the Queen and kissed her hand.
Gulliver: You have a very beautiful home, your Majesty.

Some days later a lord called Reldresal visited Gulliver. Reldresal liked and trusted Gulliver. Gulliver held him in his hand and they talked. Reldresal told Gulliver some things about Lilliput.
Reldresal: Some of the lords have low heels on their shoes, and some others have high heels. Those who wear high heels don't like those who wear low heels. The King wears very low heels, so the people with low heels have most of the power.
Gulliver: But most people wear high heels…
Reldresal: Yes, and the King's son wears one high and one low heel. But this is not the only problem that Lilliput has.

Next to Lilliput was another island called Blefuscu. Little people lived on Blefuscu, too. Lilliput had problems with Blefuscu.
Reldresal: A long time ago people used to break their boiled eggs at the big end. One day the King's grandfather cut his finger while he was breaking an egg.
Gulliver: Oh! Did he stop eating eggs after that?
Reldresal: No, everybody must eat eggs. But he made a law, that everybody should break their eggs at the small end. Some people didn't like that law and escaped to Blefuscu. There, they still break their eggs at the big end.
Gulliver: Is that a problem?
Reldresal: Yes. Lilliput is at war with Blefuscu.

Gulliver: Do you need my help in your war against Blefuscu?
Reldresal: Yes. Their ships will be here soon.
Blefuscu was 1.24 miles from Lilliput. Gulliver went up on a hill and saw fifty ships in the Blefuscu harbor. He decided to go to Blefuscu. The water in the channel between the two islands wasn't very deep. Most of the way he walked in the water. There were a lot of people on the ships. When they saw Gulliver, they were terrified. They immediately jumped into the sea and swam ashore.

When Gulliver got to the harbor, all the ships were empty. He tied all the ships together and pulled them to Lilliput. When the people of Blefuscu saw what he was doing, they started screaming. They shot arrows at Gulliver, but they didn't hurt him. Soon Gulliver arrived in Lilliput. The people there were very happy. Gulliver spoke to the King.
Gulliver: Long live the King!
King of Lilliput: Thank you, Gulliver. I’m going to make you a Nardac. This is a great honor.

With no ships, Blefuscu could not attack Lilliput. Three weeks later, the King of Blefuscu visited Lilliput to make peace. Because he was a Nardac, Gulliver could meet the King of Blefuscu.
Gulliver: You may take your ships back now.
King of Blefuscu: Thank you, you are very kind. What can I do for you?
Gulliver: You must never make war against Lilliput again.
King of Blefuscu: As you wish. Please come and visit Blefuscu.
Gulliver: I will. Thank you for your invitation.

The King of Lilliput wasn't happy. He wanted to keep the ships and become King of Blefuscu, too. Most of the lords agreed with the King and wanted to keep the ships. Reldresal went to see Gulliver.
Reldresal: You must be very careful. You have a lot of enemies in Lilliput now.
Gulliver: Why?
Reldresal: Because you gave the ships back to Blefuscu. Skyresh Bolgolam says that you like Blefuscu more than you like Lilliput, and you like breaking your boiled eggs at the big end…

Gulliver lived in the old temple. He cut down some tall trees and made himself a table and a chair. Often, some of the lords and ladies of Lilliput visited Gulliver. Gulliver put them on his table. There, he had some small tables and chairs and they could sit down. Gulliver cost Lilliput a lot of money. Two hundred people made his clothes and three hundred people cooked for him. They all lived in small houses near the big temple. They cooked all the time, because one Lilliputian meal was only one mouthful for Gulliver.

Some of the lords in Lilliput, like Skyresh Bolgolam and Lord Flimnap, were Gulliver's enemies. One day they spoke to the King.
Lord Flimnap: Your Majesty, the Man-Mountain is costing the country a lot of money.
King of Lilliput: I know, but what can we do?

Gulliver waited on the beach for some time. Then a man spoke to him. Man: Come, Mr. Man-Mountain, I will take you to the capital city. Our King is waiting for you.

Gulliver put the man on his shoulder and he told Gulliver the way to the capital. When they arrived at the city gates, Gulliver put the man down.

Captain: Welcome on board. Who are you?
Gulliver: I'm Gulliver and I'm a doctor from England. I was on Lilliput for a long time.
Captain: Lilliput? I don't know it.
Gulliver: It's a strange island. Everything there is very small and the people are only 5 inches tall.
The captain thought that Gulliver was crazy. Then Gulliver showed him the small animals and the captain believed him.
Captain: We are going to England.
Gulliver: Wonderful! I will see my family again.

Some months later, they arrived in England. Gulliver's wife and children were very happy to see him and he was happy to be home again. His children played with the small animals from Lilliput. Gulliver made a lot of money from showing the animals to people. But soon, he wanted to travel again…
